Installing a replacement toilet requires the right tools and knowledge. Here is a step-by-step guide to installing common replacement toilets.

Gather your tools and materials

Before starting, it’s important to have all the necessary tools and materials on hand. You’ll need a replacement toilet, wax ring, mounting bolts, adjustable wrench, screwdriver, pliers, and a putty knife. Check your new toilet’s instructions to ensure you aren’t missing anything that may be unique to your new toilet.

Turn off the water supply

To start, turn off the water supply to the toilet by shutting off the valve located behind the toilet. Next, flush the toilet to remove water from the bowl and tank. Use a sponge or towel to soak up any remaining water.

Remove the old toilet

Remove the nuts from the bolts holding the toilet in place and use a putty knife to scrape off any remaining wax from the flange. Gently rock the toilet back and forth until it comes loose, then lift it off the flange and place it to the side.

Prepare the flange

Remove any debris or old wax from the flange, and ensure that it is clean and level. If the flange is damaged or corroded, you may need to replace it before installing the new toilet.

Install the wax ring

Place the new wax ring on the flange, making sure it is centered and level. Be careful not to compress the wax ring too much, as this can cause leaks.

Install the mounting bolts

Insert the new mounting bolts into the flange, making sure they are properly aligned with the bolt holes on the toilet base.

Install the new toilet

Lower the new toilet onto the mounting bolts, ensuring the bolts pass through the corresponding holes on the toilet base. Press down on the toilet to compress the wax ring and secure it. Use a level to ensure the toilet is straight and level.

Attach the toilet to the floor

Install the nuts onto the mounting bolts and tighten them with an adjustable wrench, being careful not to overtighten and crack the toilet base.

Connect the water supply

Attach the water supply line to the toilet’s fill valve and turn on the water supply. Check for leaks around the base of the toilet and tighten the nuts as necessary.

Test the toilet

Flush the toilet a few times to ensure that it is working properly and there are no leaks. If everything looks good, you’re all set!
